Rules for Importing Cats and Dogs from Norway to the United Kingdom

Requirements for Cats and Dogs

Microchip

Mandatory for all pets entering the United Kingdom. The microchip must comply with ISO 11784/11785 standards and be implanted before the rabies vaccination.

Rabies Vaccination

Mandatory for all cats and dogs.

  • The first rabies vaccination can be administered no earlier than at 12 weeks of age.
  • The vaccination must be administered at least 21 days before entry.
  • It must remain valid at the time of travel.

Parasite Treatment (Deworming)

For dogs:

  • If traveling directly from Norway to the UK, treatment against Echinococcus multilocularis is not required.
  • If the route passes through the EU, parasite treatment is mandatory and must be administered 24–120 hours (1–5 days) before entry into the UK.

For cats: Not required but recommended for general health.

EU Pet Passport or GB Veterinary Certificate

If the pet has an EU Pet Passport issued in Norway, no additional documents are required, provided it includes:

  • Microchip information.
  • Rabies vaccination details.
  • Parasite treatment details (for dogs, if applicable).

If the pet does not have an EU Pet Passport, a GB Veterinary Certificate must be issued by a licensed veterinarian in Norway no earlier than 10 days before travel.

Additional Recommendations

Traveling with Multiple Pets

If traveling with more than five pets, documentation proving participation in competitions, exhibitions, or sporting events is required. Otherwise, the transportation will be considered commercial.

Transport Conditions

Ensure pets are transported in safe and comfortable carriers that meet UK requirements.

Notes

Minimum Age for Vaccination

The first rabies vaccination must be administered no earlier than at 12 weeks of age, and a 21-day waiting period is required after vaccination before entry into the UK.

Parasite Treatment

For dogs traveling directly from Norway, parasite treatment is not required. However, if the route passes through the EU, treatment is mandatory.

Careful Route Planning

Plan your route carefully, considering the requirements of all transit countries. Since there is no direct connection between Norway and the UK, compliance with the rules of transit countries is essential.

You can send this page to a veterinarian, courier, relocation agent, or any specialist involved in preparing pet travel documents or organising the transportation of a pet.

In practice, short instructions published on official websites are often incomplete or simplified. This frequently leads to mistakes in veterinary documents, problems during airline check-in, or difficulties at border control. If you have any doubts, it is better to share this page with the person preparing the documents or travel route and double-check everything before the trip.
