Pet Transportation from Serbia to the UK via the EU
– Rules & Required Documents
General Information for Pet Travel from Serbia to the UK
Since pets cannot be transported directly by air from Serbia to the United Kingdom, owners must meet the requirements for both the EU transit country and the UK. Typically, pets arrive in an EU country (such as France, Belgium, or the Netherlands) and continue their journey to the UK by ground transport.
Entry Requirements for the EU Transit Country
Before proceeding to the UK, pets must meet EU entry requirements:
- Microchip: The pet must be microchipped before or on the same day as the rabies vaccination, following ISO 11784/11785 standards.
- Rabies Vaccination: The pet must have a valid rabies vaccination administered at least 21 days before entering the EU.
- Rabies Titer Test: A blood sample must be taken at least 30 days after rabies vaccination. The test must be conducted at an EU-accredited laboratory, and a waiting period of 3 months must be observed before entering the EU.
- EU Pet Health Certificate: Required for entry and valid for 10 days from the date of issue.
- Tapeworm Treatment (Dogs Only): Mandatory for dogs entering Finland, Ireland, Malta, or Norway, administered 24–120 hours before entry.
Microchip Identification
Must meet the same standards as required by the EU.
Rabies Vaccination
The rabies vaccination must be valid at the time of entry into the UK.
Rabies Titer Test
The results of the test used for EU entry are also required for entry into the UK.
Tapeworm Treatment (For Dogs Only)
- Dogs must receive tapeworm treatment between 24–120 hours (1–5 days) before entry into the UK.
- If the treatment was performed before EU entry within this time frame, additional treatment is not required.
EU and UK Pet Health Certificates
For entry into the United Kingdom, two separate health certificates are required:
- 📄 (Word) EU Pet Health Certificate: Issued in the country of departure and required for transit through the EU. This certificate must confirm compliance with EU regulations, including valid rabies vaccination and microchip details.
- 📄 (Word) UK Pet Health Certificate: Also issued in the country of departure, this certificate confirms compliance with the UK's import requirements. Both certificates are obtained simultaneously before travel.
It is important to ensure that both certificates are correctly issued to prevent delays during entry into the UK.
International Pet Passport
Recommended for verification purposes, as some EU or UK authorities may request it to confirm pet details.
Important Notes
- All documents must be properly completed to avoid delays at the border.
- Rabies titer testing is mandatory for pets entering the UK from Serbia via the EU.
- Tapeworm treatment for dogs is a strict requirement before entering the UK.
- Crossing from the EU to the UK is typically done via the Eurotunnel or ferry routes, which only allow pet travel via approved routes.
