➕ Common mistakes when preparing pet travel documents from Switzerland to Serbia

During international transport of cats and dogs, most problems at the airport or border occur not because documents are missing, but because of small mistakes in how the veterinary documents were prepared.

For the route Switzerland → Serbia, the following issues are among the most common:

  • The microchip number in the pet passport and the veterinary certificate does not match.
  • The rabies vaccination was performed before the microchip was implanted, which makes the vaccination invalid for international travel.
  • The pet is travelling after the first rabies vaccination but the required waiting period before entry was not respected.
  • The veterinary health certificate was issued too early before travel, which may cause it to expire before arrival.
  • Different documents contain inconsistent information about the pet (microchip number, date of birth, or description).
  • The clinical health examination before travel was not recorded properly in the certificate or passport.

Even a small inconsistency in veterinary documents may lead to additional checks at the border, delays at the airport, or the need to urgently reissue documents before departure.

Airline Regulations

Always check your airline’s pet travel policy. Airlines typically explain rules for in-cabin and cargo transport, but may not be aware of Serbia's veterinary entry requirements.

You can send this page to a veterinarian, courier, relocation agent, or any specialist involved in preparing pet travel documents or organising the transportation of a pet.

In practice, short instructions published on official websites are often incomplete or simplified. This frequently leads to mistakes in veterinary documents, problems during airline check-in, or difficulties at border control. If you have any doubts, it is better to share this page with the person preparing the documents or travel route and double-check everything before the trip.
