Entry Requirements for Cats and Dogs
Preparation Steps
Transporting a pet from the USA to Georgia requires compliance with all established veterinary requirements. Failure to meet even one of them may result in refusal of entry.
- The dog or cat must be at least 6 months old.
- Microchip implantation before rabies vaccination (ISO 11784/11785 standard).
- Rabies vaccination must be administered no earlier than 12 weeks of age and at least 30 days before travel.
- Veterinary certificate confirming microchip and rabies vaccination, signed by an authorized veterinarian in English.
- Declaration of non-commercial movement of the animal.
- Rabies antibody titer test required.
Microchip
Microchipping is mandatory for all dogs entering Georgia. The chip must comply with ISO 11784/11785 standards and must be implanted before rabies vaccination. For cats, microchipping is not required but is strongly recommended.
Rabies Vaccination
Rabies vaccination is mandatory for both dogs and cats entering Georgia.
- Must be administered no earlier than 12 weeks of age.
- At least 30 days must pass between vaccination and travel.
- The vaccination must be valid at the time of entry.
Rabies Antibody Titer Test
This test is mandatory for all pets (both dogs and cats) entering Georgia from the USA.
- Must be performed no earlier than 30 days after rabies vaccination.
- Minimum accepted level: 0.5 IU/ml.
- Must be conducted in an officially approved laboratory.
- Entry to Georgia is only permitted after 3 months have passed since the blood sample was taken.
- If the pet is revaccinated before the previous rabies vaccine expires, the test does not need to be repeated.
➕ Why is the rabies titer test required in Georgia?
Although the USA is considered a low-risk rabies country by the EU and UK, Georgia follows a different rule.
The official Georgian veterinary certificate refers to the EU Regulation 577/2013, which includes a list of countries from which pets can enter without a titer test. However, Georgia does not recognize the USA within this list.
Therefore, a rabies titer test is required when importing a pet from the USA to Georgia, despite the USA’s status in other regions.
Border Control, Transport Conditions and Risks
Veterinary Check upon Entry
Upon arrival in Georgia, a veterinary inspection is performed at the border checkpoint. If any required document is missing or improperly completed, the pet may be denied entry.
Number of Pets
Up to five pets can be brought into Georgia as non-commercial movement. If more than five pets are traveling, the entry may be considered commercial and subject to different requirements.
Transport Requirements
- Pets must be transported in suitable carriers or crates, ensuring safety and comfort during the journey.
- Airlines may apply additional requirements. Check with your airline in advance.
Risks of Non-Compliance
Failure to meet Georgia’s entry requirements may lead to the following consequences:
- The pet may be refused entry and returned at the owner's expense.
- Placement of the animal in quarantine or temporary isolation.
- Additional veterinary procedures or document re-issuance.
- Financial losses and delays.
