Veterinary Requirements for Entry into Georgia

Microchip Identification

Each pet must be microchipped before travel. The chip must:

  • Be implanted before or on the same day as the rabies vaccination.
  • Comply with ISO 11784/11785 standards for universal readability.

Rabies Vaccination

A valid rabies vaccine is mandatory and must be administered at least 21 days before departure. The vaccine is accepted only if:

  • The microchip was inserted before or on the date of vaccination.
  • The vaccine is recognized and remains valid at the time of entry.

Veterinary Health Certificate

An international veterinary certificate issued by an official veterinarian is required for travel to Georgia. It must be:

  • Completed in English and signed by an authorized veterinarian.
  • Issued shortly before travel (within the timeframe set by Georgian regulation).
  • Include microchip details, rabies vaccination record, and general health confirmation.

➕ EU Pet Passport – Why It Is Not Accepted for Entry into Georgia

Although EU pet passports are widely used within the European Union, they are not considered a valid document for entry into Georgia.

  • Georgia requires an international veterinary certificate completed in English.
  • Pet passports are not designed for use outside the EU and do not meet Georgian entry regulations.
  • Even if all required vaccinations are recorded in the passport, a separate certificate must still be issued.

Parasite Treatment

Internal and external parasite treatments are not required by Georgian law. However, it is highly recommended to deworm your pet and treat for fleas or ticks 2–3 days before travel to ensure comfort and hygiene during the journey.

Final Reminders

  • Check all information on the certificate carefully before departure.
  • Ensure that the rabies vaccine is still valid on the date of entry.
  • Use only the official certificate format — the EU pet passport will not be accepted.

You can send this page to a veterinarian, courier, relocation agent, or any specialist involved in preparing pet travel documents or organising the transportation of a pet.

In practice, short instructions published on official websites are often incomplete or simplified. This frequently leads to mistakes in veterinary documents, problems during airline check-in, or difficulties at border control. If you have any doubts, it is better to share this page with the person preparing the documents or travel route and double-check everything before the trip.
