The pet transport market is changing — why the old van model is breaking down
The pet transport market is changing:
why the old van model is breaking down
A practical industry analysis from fourteen years of work in pet transport
Over the past few years, something rather important has been unfolding in the pet transport industry.
Quietly. Gradually. But now quite visibly to those who pay attention.
I have been transporting cats and dogs for 14 years. And for the past 8–9 years, I have been studying, in depth, the legislation governing pet movement across multiple jurisdictions: the United Kingdom, the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Russia, and others.
The conclusion is straightforward. The market is entering a point of structural change.
This did not begin yesterday
This shift did not begin yesterday.
A meaningful change started with Lucy’s Law — a turning point that placed genuine animal welfare above convenience and volume. For a time, the pandemic masked the consequences.
But since last year, the effects have become increasingly apparent.
More than 2.5 years ago, I was already saying this publicly: the model of “filling a van and then departing” would not hold.
I said that the industry would need to move towards Pet Travel: smaller, controlled, predictable transport. That warning was largely ignored.
We are now seeing why.
Why the traditional commercial model is weakening
The traditional commercial model relies on one thing: full capacity.
Historically, it was not uncommon to transport 30–40 animals in a single vehicle across Europe, only to split them into smaller groups before entering the United Kingdom.
Formally compliant. Operationally strained. And critically — entirely dependent on numbers.
The economics are simple. Without sufficient animals, the journey becomes unprofitable.
And so begins a familiar pattern:
departure dates shift;
clients are asked to wait;
additional animals are sought in order to “complete” the trip.
Each delay increases costs.
And at a certain point, a difficult reality emerges: the journey becomes economically unviable to execute as promised.
Funds may already have been taken. But the model itself no longer holds.
This is not necessarily malice. It is structural weakness.
And we will see more of it.
Why I have always worked differently
For this reason, I have always worked differently. From the outset — Pet Travel.
typically 1–3 pets, occasionally up to 5;
fixed departure dates;
no dependency on “filling space”;
for longer routes: air plus road, for example via Paris.
It is not a mass model.
But it is controlled, predictable, and accountable.
For independent travellers, documentation is the real pressure point
For those travelling independently, there is another critical point.
Most problems do not arise during transport. They arise with documentation.
Misunderstood rules. Incorrect sequencing. Costly mistakes.
To address this, I created a detailed resource explaining requirements by route:

I also created a structured document review service.
Not a quick glance, but a proper, step-by-step verification of your specific journey.
This service exists because I have spent countless hours explaining the same critical details to owners. Now it can be done clearly, efficiently, and without uncertainty.
If you need help, all services are available on one page:
pet transport;
consultation;
veterinary document check;
obtaining veterinary documents on behalf of the owner.

In summary
The market is not disappearing. But it is becoming more exacting.
And the real question is no longer price. It is this:
Is the transport model truly viable — and will the journey take place as promised?
I do not write analyses like this often — time rarely allows it.
But this is one of those moments where clarity matters.
If you found this useful, do consider saving or sharing it. It may help someone make the right decision at the right time.
